OUR STORY
BLKTRNET - The Black Translators' Network, is a groundbreaking Community Interest Company (CIC) created for and by Black translators. Founded by PhD candidate Anita Barton-Williams, BLKTRNET draws inspiration from the influential works of John Keene's Translating Poetry, Translating Blackness, Aaron Robertson's Publishers Need More Black Friends, and Dr. Kaiama L. Glover's Blackness in French: On Translation, Haiti, and the Matter of Race. These works provided critical insights into the importance of supporting and empowering Black translators and the translation of Black literature, shaping the foundation of BLKTRNET.
OUR MISSION
As the world's first network of its kind, BLKTRNET is on a mission to empower and support Black translators while actively promoting the translation of Black literature. Operating as a CIC, we are committed to fostering a vibrant community that nurtures professional growth, facilitates cultural exchange, and ensures equitable opportunities for Black translators. Our mission is driven by a deep commitment to the centring of Black experiences.
BLKTRNET’s community-building strategy comprises of three phases, the first and current phase is dedicated to creating a network that focuses on establishing a community of Black translators and supporting them throughout their careers. Our aims and objectives include establishing a hub for Black translators called The Verandah, providing a space for communication, knowledge exchange, and support. Additionally, we aim to develop an online directory dedicated to showcasing the expertise of Black translators, enhancing their visibility within the industry.
